The Mandalorian star Gina Carano has faced calls for removal from the series after posting a number of anti-face mask memes on Twitter.

The actor was previously criticised by some fans for social media posts made earlier this year that were accused of “mocking” transgender people.

Carano, who plays the mercenary ex-Shock Trooper Cara Dune on the Disney+ Star Wars spin-off, also recently tweeted in apparent support of US president Donald Trump’s unsubstantiated claims about election fraud.

“We need to clean up the election process so we are not left feeling the way we do today,” she wrote. “Put laws in place that protect us against voter fraud.

“Investigate every state.  Film the counting. Flush out the fake votes. Require ID. Make Voter Fraud end in 2020. Fix the system.”

She also shared internet memes that seem to condemn the pandemic safety precaution of mask-wearing, including one that reads, “In a world where everyone wears a mask, it’s a privilege to see a soul”.

Another said: “Democratic Government Leaders now recommends [sic] we all wear blindfolds along with masks so we can’t see what’s really going on.”

In the replies to her tweets, many fans of The Mandalorian voiced their objection to Carano’s remarks, as well as her previous remarks about gender and the practice of sharing pronouns.

The hashtag #FireGinaCarano also began trending in parts of the US as a result.

“Disney needs to f***ing do something about this,” wrote one commenter. “Gina Carano needs to walk away from The Mandalorian. There’s no place for people like her in the Star Wars community.”

Another wrote: “She’s spread bats*** conspiracy theories about covid, spread bats*** conspiracy theories about election fraud, and mocked pronouns. She no longer gets the benefit of the doubt. Get her outta here,  @starwars.”

“You know I really liked ur character in The Mandalorian,” wrote someone else, “but because of you I don’t think I’ll be able to enjoy it anymore. Ruined it.”
