Manchester United are considering a move for Leicester City star James Maddison next summer, according to the Manchester Evening News.
And that could be good news for Tottenham, with the continued pursuit of Maddison suggesting that United are no longer looking at Spurs midfielder Christian Eriksen.
The Red Devils and Real Madrid were both linked with a move for Eriksen in the summer, after the Danish international spoke out about his future and said that it might be time for a new challenge.
However, a move failed to materialise for Eriksen and it was reported that Manchester United were also interested in signing Maddison, along with Manchester City and Liverpool.
Maddison was another player who did not move in the window despite being linked with a summer switch, with the 22-year-old staying at Leicester, where he is currently under contract until 2023.
But the MEN reports that Manchester United are continuing to monitor Maddison's progress, with the former Norwich City playmaker starting the season well, with two assists as the Foxes have made an unbeaten start to the new campaign.
The report states that Maddison fits the profile of what United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking for in the transfer market, being a talented young British player with Premier League experience.
This summer United signed Croydon-born full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace, talented Welsh winger Daniel James from Swansea City and English centre-back Harry Maguire from Leicester City.
And it is now being reported that Solskjaer considers Maddison as the preferable option for next summer, having briefly explored the possibility of signing Eriksen, whose contract at Tottenham is set to expire at the end of the season.
Maddison was named in Gareth Southgate's latest England squad for the European Championships qualifiers against Bulgaria and Kosovo, but he did not make an appearance.
