Manchester United make Dayot Upamecano transfer decision that could be bad news for Arsenal

Manchester United have made a Dayot Upamecano transfer decision which will interest Arsenal fans.

Upamecano has been on Arsenal's transfer wish list this summer but the defender was signed to a new long-term deal at RB Leipzig.

But it's understood that the new contract was simply a ploy by the Germans to make sure they didn't lose out on a transfer fee next summer when he would have become a free agent.

Now though it appears Arsenal will have to battle United for the centre-back, with the Red Devils stepping up their interest in the 21-year-old.

Mikel Arteta confident Aubameyang will sign again with Arsenal

United are close to signing Donny van de Beek from Ajax and now ESPN have reported that the club will turn their attention to Upamecano.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been frustrated in his bid to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund this summer and now United are focusing on acquiring a partner for Harry Maguire at the back.

Upamecano's previous contract had a release clause of £53 million but reports now say his new agreement has a release clause of around £38million, per Mirror Football.

Meanwhile, Arsenal fans were recently treated to some teasing comments from Arsenal academy manager and former centre-back Per Mertesacker on Upamecano.

He told Goal: "I was very excited about the Atletico game (in the Champions League). He showed so much and did it right: the courage of a Lucio who just goes forward, but also my solid game of simply finding the right man or withdrawing.

"If he continues like this, works on himself and remains consistent, he will generate more interest. He's definitely one of the most exciting central defenders the world has to offer right now.

"RB certainly made the contract extension very tasty for him. It's exciting to see where his path is going."
