The Manchester United plan to block Chelsea transfer for Angel Gomes

Chelsea are said to be keen on signing Manchester United youngster Angel Gomes at the end of the season on a 'free' transfer.

A compensation fee would be owed to United if Gomes does move to Stamford Bridge, but United are said to be "desperate" to keep the young midfielder, and have offered him a contract worth £25,000-per-week to commit his future to Old Trafford.

The Metro state that United feel it is a generous offer for a 19-year-old, with Mason Greenwood's recent renewal as a benchmark for academy graduates hoping to make the step up to the first team.

However, with Gomes making just six appearances this season, there is reportedly a suggestion of impatience over his pathway to first team status.

United are said to believe that with Gomes' diminutive size, he is more likely to be a late bloomer in the mould of Jesse Lingard, who did not break into the first team until the age of 24.

But Chelsea are said to be waiting in the wings for the youngster who captained England to the Under-19s World Cup in 2018.

The Blues have reportedly made it clear that they would be willing to match United's offer, and will offer him a place in the first-team squad next season.

Frank Lampard is said to be "particularly keen" on Gomes, and his utilisation of young players in the squad this season could be the key in determining Gomes' future.

The likes of Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori and now Billy Gilmour have all seen significant playing time this season.

United completed a new contract for youngster Tahith Chong this week, and they are hopeful that Gomes will agree to extend his stay.

"With Tahith, we're very happy he sees his future here, we can see a good player there and we'll give him time to develop," Solskjaer told reporters.

"That is the same with Angel. We hope we can convince him in the near future and long term future that he's a Manchester United player."
