The Manchester United manager decision that had repercussions for Spurs and Mauricio Pochettino

When Mauricio Pochettino joined Tottenham in 2014, many Spurs supporters were not sure about the appointment.

Fast forward five years and Spurs fans could not imagine life without the Argentinian.

But way back in 2014, it was not just the supporters who were unsure about giving a man who had only been in England a year and a bit and did not speak the language a big job.

Daniel Levy and the Tottenham hierarchy had had another manager in their sights alongside Pochettino - Louis van Gaal.

The Dutchman was a much bigger name and Spurs were keen to get him to White Hart Lane.

But Spurs were not the only ones interested, with Manchester United sifting through a David Moyes-sized mess, and van Gaal chose Old Trafford.

The Dutchman later admitted he had come "very close" to joining Tottenham, but five years down the line, Spurs fans are extremely content with the decision Levy eventually made.

Van Gaal has now spoken out further on that situation five years ago.

Speaking to the BBC 's Simon Stone, he has admitted that, despite suggesting a question about regretting the move in a press conference following a 3-0 defeat to Spurs was "pathetic", that he would have been better off joining Tottenham over United.

He said: "Tottenham were a better selection because Manchester United were an old team and I knew I would have to transform them.

"Was it the wrong choice? Maybe, but I follow my heart. I worked at the number one team in the Netherlands, Germany, Spain and now also in England."
