The Manchester neighbourhood that's been named one of the coolest in the UK

Once one of the most run-down parts of Manchester, Ancoats has clocked up countless column inches in travel guides ranging from Lonely Planet to the New York Times.

Now it's claimed the top spot in a list of the UK's coolest neighbourhoods in luxury magazine Conde Nast Traveller.

Sadly, much of what makes Ancoats worth visiting - namely its thriving independent food and drink scene - remains shuttered for now as lockdown continues.

And with travel restrictions only eased in the UK for exercise purposes - and tourism boards urging people to stay in their local area for now - it's likely to be a while yet before we're planning staycations.

But in its June issue, the publication explains why it's one for your mini-break list 'in more social times ahead'.

Once 'a red-brick ghost town of derelict mills and n’er-do-well back alleys', the area is now 'a breath of fresh air' compared with the more commercial Northern Quarter, they wrote.

Singled out for particular praise was Michelin-starred Mana, run by Noma-trained chef Simon Martin 'whose dishes – yakitori eel glazed with yeast and blackcurrant vinegar, for instance – would have the area’s Victorian workers scratching their beards in puzzlement'.

Nearby, the Edinburgh Castle pub and restaurant, wine bar Blossom Street Social, fish and chips from Hip Hop Chip Shop, and the beautifully converted Halle St Peter's church also won them over.

The article also explores New Islington Marina, home to the queue-worthy Pollen Bakery, and ventures into the fringes of the Northern Quarter to the old goods warehouse that's home to Cultureplex and the Native aparthotel - 'the best place to stay in this area'.

The NHS staff and key workers currently staying at the Ducie Street hotel for free would surely agree.

Recommendations from locals Conde Nast Traveller spoke to included Rudy's Neapolitan Pizza and, erm, 'The Council House' (The Counter House).

You can see what other neighbourhoods made the cut in the full article.

While we can't visit any of the places mentioned for now, locals can find many of the businesses mentioned offering delivery and takeaway for the time being.

Rudy's is now on Deliveroo at both its Ancoats and Peter Street sites, while Pollen is still selling its loaves and pastries to take out ( pre-orders open via the webshop at noon on Fridays).

Hip Hop Chip Shop has set up its own no-contact cycle delivery service on Friday and Saturday nights (request a menu and order via WhatsApp, see this tweet for more information).

Other great food and drink businesses in the area include Sugo Pasta Kitchen, which is now on Deliveroo too, and Elnecot, which is offering a new takeaway menu for collection - including Sunday roasts.

To support local hospitality businesses affected by the lockdown, we've created the takeaway widget above (click 'display interactive content' if you can't see it on your device).

Business owners can use it to list their own food and drink delivery or collection services - and customers can use it to search for restaurants and bars in their area that are open for takeaway.

Please note that the widget will display results for a five-mile radius of your postcode - which may not always match up exactly with the restaurant's delivery radius. Check directly with your chosen restaurant to see if they can deliver to you - or if they have a collection service you can use instead.
