The Manchester City claim Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt made after Port Vale win

Ian Evatt believes not even runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City could have played free flowing football in the difficult match Bolton Wanderers faced against Port Vale yesterday.

Wanderers made it 11 games unbeaten yesterday at Vale Park thanks to Gethin Jones' goal in the second half.

It ensured Wanderers cemented their place in the League Two play-offs and and four points from the automatic promotion places, as well as five from the division's summit.

Wanderers boss Evatt hailed the win as the best of the season in his view.

This was down to the quality of the pitch at Vale Park, the weather conditions which included rain and hail at times, and a Vale side which made the game 'scrappy'.

As part of the unbeaten run, Evatt's side have often showed free flowing football with many impressive attacking performances and all round ones which has helped ensure Wanderers have crept up the table.

And such were the conditions Bolton encountered against Darrell Clarke's side, he does not believe Pep Guardiola's City could have played to their famed playing style at Vale Park yesterday.

He said: "I don’t think Man City could be free flowing here today, I genuinely don’t. I think it’s impossible.

"You have to obviously respect the opposition, do the hard yards, which we did, but also show moments of quality and again we’ve shown that.

"The goal being a prime example, nothing fortunate about it really, just the way it was worked was excellent. I’m delighted and really pleased because it was a big question of all the players, can they back it up here? A difficult place to come and yes, we’ve done it.

"There is more to come. For now, we just need to rest, recover, freshen our minds up over the next couple of days.

"The players will have a couple of days off and rest, they’ve earnt that, and then we’ll go again on Tuesday at Lostock really working on the finer details to prepare for the run-in.”
