The man who turned a park used to dump burnt-out cars into an amazing football pitch

In the middle of a Cardiff suburb sits a park with pristine blanket of grass that looks good enough to grace the Premier League.

The pitch is home to Splott Albion , a football club with 13 teams for both men and women. And it's the pride and joy of Pete Davies.

The 31-year-old from Birchgrove took matters into his own hands after becoming fed up with the state of the amenities available to locals.

When he first took over, a burnt out car was left in the middle of the park.

He said: "It was a bombsite, There was a burnt out car, illegal bikes were riding over and ruining the pitch. It was a sh** hole, to be honest.

"All the staff at the club were annoyed as the council weren't helping so I decided to help out."

And this is how the park looks now:

Pete lived across the road from the park and would spend hours each Saturday morning cutting the grass.

He has spent up to £16,000 of his own money on various equipment.

"I purchased the machinery myself along with all the equipment," he said.

"It's a lot of money but I enjoy helping others and I wanted to give back to the community. Since the work has been done on the pitch, a lot of younger people from the area attend football games, they keep off the pitch, more people want to be involved in the work."

Pete, who has set up his own gardening company, Growing Concerns Grounds Maintenance, added: "We have achieved so much in three years, imagine what we can do in another two years.

"If the club can get floodlights it will totally transform the club."
