The man who reported a robbery at Oystermouth Castle told off by police after investigation reveals truth about incident

An alleged robbery in the grounds of Oystermouth Castle never took place, police have announced.

South Wales Police issued an appeal for information after a 31-year-old man reported being confronted by a group of up to eight males at the castle in Mumbles on September 4, on the footpath at the rear of the castle at Norton Green.

The man claimed he was walking a lurcher dog when he was approached by a "gang" of youths who "pushed him to the ground" and made off with his wallet containing a bank card and an e-cigarette.

Officers investigating the alleged incident said the matter was treated seriously, but the initial allegation has been withdrawn and officers are now confident that no robbery took place.

Detective Sergeant Richie Gray said: “I appreciate that reporting of this alleged incident will have caused alarm within the local community, and I would like to thank those who assisted with the appeal.”

Why the man reported the incident when there wasn't one has remains unclear.

Police sources said the man has been "spoken to" by officers and warned about his future conduct.
