The Man Utd to Watford move that could prove to be good news for Swansea City

James Garner has sealed a loan move to Watford from Manchester United.

The young midfielder will spend the duration of the 2020/21 campaign with the Hornets and is available for selection for his new club's visit to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

He is a player who was linked with a move to Swansea City during the course of the summer transfer window.

Garner is someone Steve Cooper knows well from his time in the England set-up. He captained the England Under-17 side that reached the semi-finals of the 2018 Under-17 European Championships under the current Swans boss.

Cooper is a big admirer of the 19-year-old, although, in the current window, the Swansea head coach has been keen to focus on strengthening other areas of his squad, most notably the attack and defence.

Swansea have plenty of options in the centre of the park, with George Byers, Jay Fulton, Korey Smith and Morgan Gibbs-White able to operate in the role along with captain Matt Grimes.

Garner's switch from Old Trafford to Vicarage Road comes amid Watford's interest in Swansea skipper Grimes.

Vladimir Ivić's side targeted Grimes as a potential replacement for Abdoulaye Doucouré who recently joined Everton.

But, following their capture of Garner, it remains to be seen whether or not they will continue to pursue the central midfielder.

It's understood the Swans have received no offers for their captain, with Cooper publicly stating as such in a press conference ahead of his side's Championship clash with Birmingham City at the Liberty Stadium this weekend.

"Honestly, there’s nothing to report on any possible ins or outs," he said.

Grimes captained Swansea as they kick-started their league campaign in perfect fashion by beating Preston 1-0 at Deepdale last weekend.

He is expected to lead his side out at the Liberty this weekend against Aitor Karanka's Birmingham.
