The Man City youngster showing Pep Guardiola why he fought Barcelona to sign him

Last summer, Manchester City won the race to sign highly-rated Barcelona youngster Adria Bernabe, with the Catalan club losing the fight to keep one of their brightest talents.

Bernabe hasn't hidden that talent since then in his first season at the City Football Academy, but the 17-year-old sent watching manager Pep Guardiola another reminder of why he was bought to the club on Monday night.

City's U18s booked their place in the final of the FA Youth Cup with a hard-fought win against West Brom, and Bernabe was a constant threat in a performance like many Guardiola has presided over this season.

With the visitors spending large periods camped in their own half, it was up to City to force chances and switch the play.

And when the midfield trio of Rowan McDonald, Tommy Doyle and Felix Nmecha had the chance, it was Bernabe they looked to.

Early on, Bernabe received the ball on the left and sent a fine cross into Ben Knight to open the scoring for City. He continued to press the visiting defence whenever he had the opportunity, linking up well with fullback Jeremie Frimpong.

City's youngsters were clearly comfortable in displaying Guardiola's passing style - as all sides at throughout the club are coached - but Bernabe perhaps showed the clearest understanding of the club's philosophy. It is, after all, not dissimilar to the education he will have received at Barcelona's La Masia academy.

With Guardiola and first team coach Mikel Arteta watching proceedings at the Academy Stadium, he will have been encouraged to see Bernabe consistently find his man with cross after cross and cut-back after cut-back.

It nearly resulted in more goals, with Felix Nmecha striking the bar in the second half the most notable of the chances he created.

Bernabe has been involved in the first team set-up already this season, so his quality is of no surprise to Guardiola. He was also part of the City side that reached the Checkatrade Trophy knockout stages before losing to eventual finalists Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

But in a night where many City youngsters showed their abilities to reach a prestigious semi-final, Bernabe also showed why City made such an effort to bring him to the club.
