The Man City player who should have taken Sergio Aguero's penalty vs Tottenham Hotspur

Manchester City missed a perfect opportunity to take the lead in their Champions League quarter-final clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night as Hugo Lloris saved Sergio Aguero’s first-half penalty.

City were awarded the spot kick after referee Bjorn Kuipers consulted with the VAR over a possible handball by Danny Rose.

The Spurs defender was adjudged to have committed a handball and Aguero was given the chance to put his team in the lead and bag a crucial away goal but his effort was saved.

But should Aguero have been the man to take the penalty in the first place? It seems strange to question the finishing ability of Man City’s all-time top scorer but the Argentine does not have a great record from 12 yards.

Rio Ferdinand follows Raheem Sterling by issuing a strong anti-racism message

Of his eight penalties in the Champions League and qualifiers for the competition, Aguero has scored just three times.

Meanwhile his teammate on Tuesday night Ilkay Gundogan has a perfect 100% record from his six spot kicks in the tournament - including one to level the scores for Borussia Dortmund against Bayern Munich in the 2013 Champions League final.

Is it time for Aguero to hand over the penalty-taking duties to the German before he costs his side again?

Several City fans have taken to social media to make a similar point at half time.
