The Man City comparison that will excite Arsenal fans going forward with Mikel Arteta

Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole heaped praise on Arsenal for the build-up in the opening goal against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Gunners, chasing back-to-back victories in the league for the first time in August, opened the scoring in the first period as Alexandre Lacazette poked a pass through to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to tuck home.

While the partnership from the two forwards was superb, it was part of an Arsenal move that involved a total of 19 passes, with David Luiz and Mesut Ozil also playing a part in the passage of play.

As a result, Cole identified that the goal was comparable to the sort of efforts that Manchester City have scored on several occasions under Pep Guardiola and during Mikel Arteta's time at the Etihad Stadium as assistant head coach, with the pundit highlighting the brilliance of the play.

Mikel Arteta: We switched off for the goal

"It could even be Man City scoring this goal, it's a very Man City goal. David Luiz is getting on the ball and looking for pockets," he told BT Sport.

"The first time passing, the timing of the run. What [Alexandre] Lacazette does brilliantly is he changes the trajectory of the ball, splitting the defence of Crystal Palace.

"The run is different class, the touch and the finish. That little dummy where he plays it the other side of [James] Tomkins, it's fantastic."

Peter Crouch added: "If [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang is going to play off the left, that's what he has to do. He has to make those runs beyond Lacazette and play as a striker coming off the left."

It was not enough to give Arsenal victory in south London though, with Jordan Ayew scoring an equaliser for the Eagles early in the second half, before Aubameyang was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Max Meyer, as the game finished 1-1.
