The Making of Midnight Oil traces the impact of the rock group on Australia’s musical, political and cultural history.
With Rob Hirst on drums, Andrew James on guitar and Jim Moginie on keyboard and lead guitar, the band started out on the pub circuit of Sydney’s Northern Beaches under the name Farm.
They were joined in 1975 by ANU student Peter Garrett who answered an advertisement for a lead singer. Garrett moved to Sydney, the band changed its name to Midnight Oil and began touring the Australian east coast within the year.
The exhibition draws from their early development, and follows them as they won over audiences around the world with their rock tunes and social conscience. It was developed by Hirst and includes a variety of memorabilia including his water tank, dingo and roo from the Diesel and Dust tour, as well as Peter Garrett’s towering microphone stand. The exhibition also includes banners, rare photographs, films and original lyrics.
