The maker of Jaffa Cakes has revealed the chocolate bit is really the bottom

For years, it has been debated whether a Jaffa Cake is in fact a cake or a biscuit.

But chocolate orange fans now have something bigger to worry about.

All this time, Britain has been eating the sweet treat the wrong way.

According to a spokesperson for Jaffa Cakes, which is owned by McVitie and Price, the chocolate part of the treat isn't the top, it's actually the bottom, the Mirror reports.

This means we've been holding them - and eating them - upside down for as long as we can remember.

The surprising fact was confirmed by the brand on social media.

A man named David claims to have messaged the Jaffa Cake official page, asking: "What side of the Jaffa is the bottom?"

A screenshot of the conversation, shared on the Facebook group, Family Lockdown Tips & Ideas, revealed the company's shocking confirmation.

They replied: "Hi David, our Jaffa Cakes go through a reservoir of chocolate, so the chocolate is on the bottom. Thanks, Jaffa Cakes."

David was stunned by this confirmation, writing: "WTF dude".

And he wasn't the only one who was shocked.

"OMG just turned my world upside down," one person said.

A third person questioned whether the news could be true, writing: "On the box it’s on the top?"

But more level-headed fans were less fussed with the news.

"Who cares? Just shove 'em in your gob," one person commented.
