The major Swansea junction that's closing in the evening and at night for resurfacing

Resurfacing works will result in the closure of Swansea's Broadway junction in the evening and overnight.

Starting from this evening, until August 7, Cockett Road, Townhill Road and Vivian Road in Broadway will be closed from 6.30pm until 6am.

The work is being carried out as part of efforts to remodel the junctions of Vivian Road, Broadway, Cockett Road and Townhill Road, replacing the existing mini roundabouts with traffic signal controls.

Swansea Council has said the Broadway junction has been identified as a key route in the west of Swansea which experiences high levels of congestion throughout the day.

Its traffic engineers have carried out analysis of projected traffic flows in future years, taking into consideration future development, and therefore the authority has decided its existing junction design will not be able to cope with projected increases in traffic volumes.

It says it is estimated that waiting times at the junction could quadruple in future years if changes are not implemented.

Works got underway back in January, and there has been considerable waits for queuing traffic as they continue to progress.

But it is hoped the £1 million scheme will ease congestion, introduce active travel accessibility, increase capacity and safety, improve public transport journey time, reliability and efficiency, improve the pedestrian crossings (improving access to the college and those who walk to the local comprehensive school) and remove the complexity that exists with the closely spaced double roundabouts.

A Swansea Council spokesman said: "We’re reminding motorists and residents of overnight road closures starting tonight at the Broadway junction in Cockett.

"The closures are taking place to complete road re-surfacing and will see the closure of Cockett Road, Townhill Road and Vivian Road between 6.30pm until 6am on affected nights. Advance warning signs have been in place since last week and traffic will be diverted around the road closures.

"The improvements are to remodel the junctions of Vivian Road, Broadway, Cockett Road and Townhill Road, replacing the existing mini roundabouts with traffic signal controls.

"Once complete the new scheme will help to manage increases in traffic volumes in the coming years.

"We thank motorists for their patience while the upgrade takes place."
