The major injury headache facing Mikel Arteta at Arsenal before he has even begun

Mikel Arteta is set to become the new manager at Arsenal, replacing the outgoing Unai Emery.

Emery was shown the door after a poor start to the season, and the form hasn't taken an upturn under interim manager Freddie Ljungberg, who has lost two, drew one and won just one of his five Premier League matches in charge of the club.

The latest defeat was a 3-0 loss to reigning Champions Manchester City, but there may have been a bigger price than the lack of points to come from the game.

With left-back Kieran Tierney out for around three months with a dislocated shoulder, it left Arsenal with just one recognised first team left back at the club - Sead Kolasinac.

The Bosnian was named in the starting lineup for the match against Man City, but had to be replaced after just 40 minutes.

The latest injury update from Arsenal confirms that the defender sustained ankle ligament damage, and he will not return to training until the new year, leaving the Gunners short on options.

Youngster Buyako Saka replaced Kolasinac during the match, and played the rest of the game in an unnatural left-back position, a role he has only played in youth team games.

The winger would be an option for Arteta, or the new manager could opt to promote a player from the youth team, such as Tolaji Bola or Tobi Omole, who are both 20-years-old and play for the U23 side.

The decision will be one of the first that Arteta will have to make after his arrival at the Emirates Stadium.
