The major financial blow that Tottenham inflicted on Ajax after stunning Champions League win

Ajax’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night cost them far more than just a spot in the Champions League final as the club’s value plummeted by 20%.

The Dutch side went into the half-time break of their second leg semi-final clash with Spurs in Amsterdam holding a three-goal advantage and looking nailed on for a spot in next month’s final.

But a second half hat-trick from Brazilian winger Lucas Moura - with the third goal coming in deep into injury time - saw the north Londoners progress to their first every final in Europe’s top competition.

As for Ajax, the result saw the value of the club’s stock fall by around 20%, wiping out more than €162m (£140m) in the market value of the club according to Business Insider.

The Eredivisie side’s unlikely run to the semi-finals of the Champions League saw them knock off a Real Madrid team on a quest for their fourth European title in a row as well as Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus.

Such victories inspired an increase in the price of a share at the club from around €16 (£13.81) to €25 (£21.57) as investors back the Dutch giants to cash in on their increased publicity.

But now shares in AFC Ajax have dipped down to €18.90 (£16.31) at the time of writing, showing that Ajax's defeat has affected things both on and off the field.
