FOR something a little "off the beaten track" in Scotland, this "magical" and "atmospheric" castle ruin perched on the edge of a "precarious" clifftop is well worth checking out.
Findlater Castle in Aberdeenshire dates back to the 13th century and is around 50 feet above the choppy waters and rocky beach below.
The old medieval keep boasts a "spectacular" view of the surrounding Scottish landscape, and it is believed to get its name from the Gaelic term "fionn leitir", meaning "white cliff".

According to Atlas Obscura, what remains of the Scottish structure today comes from a 14th-century reconstruction of the site.
Over the years, the castle has been visited by a number of important figures, including King James V of Scotland in 1535.
However, it later fell into ruin after it was replaced by the nearby Cullen House.
According to the Findlater Castle website, the castle, which is set amidst a "dramatic" rocky promontory, offers "a captivating blend of history, architectural grandeur, and panoramic views of the Moray Coast."
Others who have come here over the years have had similar things to say about it, with users on Tripadvisor giving it a 4.5/5 out of 68 reviews.
