Julie Taymor’s production of Mozart’s famous final opera The Magic Flute is a larger-than-life theatre show for all ages, with elaborate costumes, puppetry, stilt walkers and a modern English translation by poet JD McClatchy.

The opera was written in Mozart’s final year, after he became a mason, with a libretto written by Emanuel Schikaneder. The allegorical story includes references to freemasonry and the power of truth and knowledge.

The pure-hearted Prince Tamino is lost in a strange land when he’s asked by a group of ladies to rescue Pamina with the help of a magic flute. He agrees, but soon finds the ladies and their ruler, the Queen of the Night, reveal they are not as trustworthy as he first thought.
