In the final years of Mozart’s life, he became a mason. And his opera, The Magic Flute, written to a German libretto by his masonic lodge brother Emanuel Schikaneder, is noted for its prominent masonic elements.
It tells the story of Tamino, who finds himself in a mysterious new world amid a solar eclipse. The surreal is his new reality, and he encounters strange creatures, love and a series of epic, transformative trials.
For the Adelaide production, director and designer David Lampard drew on masonic symbolism, and focused it through a 1950s lens to create a fantasy opera that explores timeless social issues. Joanna McWaters stars as Queen of the Night, Robert England plays Sarastro, and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Luke Dollman.
