“I think if you’re looking at a PC, why would you buy a PC anymore? No really, why would you buy one?” said Apple chief executive Tim Cook in January.

“Because attaching it to the end of a long stick and waving it around in public will put selfie-taking tourists (literally) in the shade, and make you a bleeding-edge boss of everyone,” was the obvious response that the interviewer failed to deliver.

Others didn’t. The MacBook Selfie Stick may be just an art project from the people who brought you the actual Netflix and Chill Room, but if art leads commerce you can expect a swathe of accessory-makers to be mass-producing it by Christmas.

While we are thankfully well aware of the MacBook’s status as the paradigm of Apple’s perfectionism machine – disdain for the staid conventions of mouse-orientation included – its selfie-stick suitability is just another layer of invention.
