The MAC appeal for Northern Ireland kids' lockdown rainbows for special exhibition

A Belfast arts venue has made an appeal to the 'lockdown Leonardos' in Northern Ireland who have helped to spread messages of hope with window rainbows during the pandemic.

The MAC, has called for children to ‘Save those Rainbows’ so they can be displayed in a special exhibition as part of their reopening programme once restrictions have been lifted.

In an exhibition, which aims to harness this active participation and appreciation of art and creativity among the wider public, the MAC is asking children to save their drawings and present them as their artistic response to the lockdown.

Their work will be displayed beside that of professional artists across the MAC’s three galleries.

Hugh Mulholland, Senior Curator at the MAC, explained the significance of the rainbows and why it is important to put them on display.

He said: “During the coronavirus pandemic, the rainbow has become a symbol for children and parents wanting to show support for NHS workers on the front line. Their drawings have been proudly displayed in the windows and doors of their homes.

“As the MAC re-opens to all our communities, we have a unique opportunity as an institution to publicly acknowledge those who continued to work in the frontline throughout the lockdown, key workers who put their lives at risk to care for others.

“So we are making a request to all those children to keep their amazing drawings and paintings for this very special exhibition. We will let you know when you can send them to us but until then keep your drawings safe and don't stop making art."
