M5 crash: Traffic diversion route as motorway expected to be closed for hours

Highways England is asking drivers heading to the South West to plan their journeys and expect delays as the southbound carriageway of the M5 remains closed near Bristol after a fatal crash.

A pedestrian has died this morning after being struck by a vehicle on the motorway.

Officers were called to the motorway at about 4.30am to a report of a pedestrian in the southbound carriageway.

Highways England has now issued a statement on what the best alternative route to take is: "The M5 in Somerset is closed southbound between junction 19 (Royal Portbury Dock) and junction 21 (near Weston-super-Mare) due to a serious collision that happened at around 4.30am this morning.

"A clearly signed diversion route is in place with drivers advised to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol via the A369 and A370 to re-join the M5 at junction 21.

"Heavy goods vehicles are advised to leave at junction 18/18a (Avonmouth) and follow the the hollow circle diversion symbol via the A4 and A370."

The incident is expected to last through to lunchtime with delays expected on the M5 and the diversion routes, the statement continued.
