One man revealed just how really hot it is outside after something strange happened to his Culver’s ice cream with M&M’s. TikToker Matt Bray (@mattbray37) shared a short clip of his dessert, which unsurprisingly has already melted. However, he–and millions of viewers–didn’t expect his choice of topping to melt, too.
“The M’s came off of the M&M’s,” Bray says in his clip. Inside his cup of chocolate ice cream, one can see various prints of just the “m” floating around. The white letter prints all rose to the surface, detached from the candy itself.
“It’s hot,” Bray says matter-of-factly.
Viewers had jokes about the M&M’s
Bray’s video earned 2.4 million views as of Sunday, with several TikTokers finding his dessert’s glitch amusing.
“So they’re just sitting in your milkshake like ‘&,’” one user joked. Another said, “This heat got everybody strippin,” while a third wrote, “There not m&m’s anymore there just m’s.”
While Bray did not disclose in his video where he got the ice cream from, several commenters pointed out that they recognized his dessert as the frozen custard from Culver’s. One commenter wrote, “IT’S NOT CULVERS FAULT I PROMISE.” Bray liked this comment.
Furthermore, the spoon is reminiscent of Culver’s iconic blue spoon. According to a TripAdvisor review, it appears Bay ordered the Free Scoop of frozen chocolate custard with M&Ms topping. You can get the free scoop with the purchase of a kid’s meal or through their app. There are also special occasions where the eatery will offer a free scoop of their custard.
What is the “m” in M&M’s made of?
Contrary to popular belief, the “m” isn’t really printed or painted on. In fact, it is made out of edible paper. A 2016 study on the “mystery” of M&Ms explained the very phenomenon Bray experienced with his Culver’s custard. And it appears it had nothing to do with the temperature.
In that study, researcher Sarah Lamphier dropped some M&Ms in water. By the time she tried to fish them out, the M’s had already detached and were floating at the top.
The explanation for the M&M’s?
“The M is actually made of an edible paper that is not water soluble, so it does not dissolve in water,” it read. “But once all the dye (which essentially acts like a glue for the M to stick to the candy) has dissolved, the M detaches from the candy and floats up to the surface of the water. It floats because the edible paper is less dense than the water.”
So it appears it has nothing to do with the heat wave the U.S. is currently experiencing.
Record-breaking heat wave
In late June, the U.S. experienced a heat wave that broke multiple records, with some temperatures rising as high as 104 degrees Fahrenheit. The Eastern United States is experiencing the brunt of it, with at least 50 records being broken, per the Associated Press. It makes sense, then, that folks are experiencing never-before-seen things due to the rising temperatures. For example, the Mary Sue recently covered a woman who walked around New York City with her new Coach bag. Because of the heat, the leather from her designer bag melted and stuck onto her shirt, ruining both items.
What should you do during a heat wave?
CBS shared some tips on how to stay safe during a heat wave. They include:
- Stay out of the sun and avoid extended time outdoors in extreme temperatures
- If outdoor activities are unavoidable, dress for the heat and wear lightweight, loose-fitting and light-colored clothing
- Drink plenty of water, even if not thirsty
- Be aware of any symptoms of overheating
