The Lyndon Dykes Scotland sacrifice as striker set to snub Australia cash incentive after Nations League call

Lyndon Dykes will be giving up a guaranteed A$3,000 (£1,640) per game with Australia if he plays for Scotland in the upcoming Nations League fixtures.

The former Livingston forward, who sealed a £2million move to English Championship side QPR last week, appears to have opted to represent the Scots rather than his native Socceroos.

He has been included in Steve Clarke ’s squad for next month’s Nations League double header against Israel and the Czech Republic.

As revealed by Record Sport , Clarke was wary that the Aussies could still tempt their man into the green and gold.

That's still a possibility until Dykes plays a competitive match for Scotland, but it appears the striker has made his decision after he accepted Clarke's call.

Former Scotland boss Craig Levein knows the process of trying to naturalise non Scots-born players well, having tried to do it during his time as national boss.

And he revealed the extra incentive that Australia can offer Dykes that could persuade him not to don the dark blue.

He told BBC Scotland: “I tried to convince a number of players to change allegiances and come and play for Scotland.

“My sole interest was having as big a pool of players as possible.

“There’s a couple of things that are quite interesting. Lyndon Dykes can play for Australia or Scotland, and it’s a silly thing but in Australia they pay A$3,000 for appearance money to their international players.

“Scotland don’t pay anything.

“People might say ‘well it’s your country of birth’ but when you have a situation where you’ve two countries to choose from, it might make a difference to some people.

“There’s a guaranteed payday from one of the countries. That’s just another aside that might make a difference.”
