The lowest rated fish and chip shops in the North East according to food hygiene ratings

It's one of the nation's favourite takeaways - but do you know if your regular fish and chip shop is up to scratch in the hygiene department?

According to the latest food hygiene ratings, these places in the North East have been given low scores.

We have listed the chippies in Newcastle, County Durham, Northumberland, South and North Tyneside that scored either one or two out of five.

One star means "major improvement necessary" and two means "improvement necessary" while a five is given to sites where hygiene standards are "very good".

The ratings below were taken from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website as they appeared on March 24, 2021.

The venues listed may be awaiting re-inspection and some of them may not have remained open during the pandemic.

There were no fish and chip shops rated two or below in Gateshead or Sunderland when checked by ChronicleLive.

And no venues had a zero rating - a zero means "urgent improvement is required".

The rating scheme, run in partnership with councils, helps people to make more informed choices about where to buy and eat food.

All ratings were correct as of March 24, 2021.
