The lowdown on Joe Rodon as Tottenham prepare to test Swansea's resolve over £20m defender

Tottenham are still in the market for a centre-back.

The one area Jose Mourinho did not strengthen during the extended transfer window was at centre-back.

But he still has time to fix that. The foreign window is closed, but there is a new domestic window open until October 16 and late on deadline day Spurs were linked with a move for Swansea City defender Joe Rodon.

A 22-year-old Wales international, could he be what Mourinho needs? Swansea are looking for around £20million for him, but Daniel Levy is unlikely to pay that.

We asked Ian Mitchelmore, from Wales Online to tell us all about the 22-year-old.

What sort of defender is he, what's his style?

Rodon is remarkably composed on the ball and certainly isn't afraid to take it upon himself to get Swansea - and Wales - playing out from the back, something that has been instilled in him right the way through his time in the club's academy. He's also dominant in the air and firm in the tackle.

Who would you liken him to?

He has regularly been compared to John Stones given that he has the attributes of a modern ball playing central defender. However, Rodon's defensive capabilities ensure he's something of a throwback too, so he has the perfect blend to suit various styles.

Where would he fit in?

Rodon can operate in either centre-back position in a back four, although he currently plays in the middle of a back three for the Swans, which allows him to play out the back, safe in the knowledge that he has additional cover next to him in Ben Cabango and Marc Guehi.

Is he worth the money?

It depends what the fee is! Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, Swansea would have hoped for around £25m - a fee similar to what Everton paid Norwich City for Ben Godfrey - for Rodon if a club came calling. However, the club's financial situation has been well documented, and the American owners could well accept a sum of between £15m and £20m. But he's already shown - at club and international level - that he has the qualities to operate above the Championship. In the current climate, anything south of £20m would have to be considered a fine piece of business for Spurs.

Can he slot straight into the team?

The lack of Premier League experience is the only blot on his copybook, however, he's fit and firing again, so there's no reason why he shouldn't be able to slot in should a move materialise. Rodon has oozed class and confidence in the opening stages of the 2020/21 campaign, with Swansea conceding just once in their opening four games, an achievement the Welshman has been a key part of.

How good is he/can he become?

He's been a Premier League player in waiting for some time now. Rodon had rotten luck with injuries last season, suffering two separate ankle issues. But he's played in all four of Swansea's Championship matches so far this term and has excelled. Speaking to WalesOnline last month, Wales boss Ryan Giggs - who handed Rodon his international debut last year - described the 22-year-old as a "class act", which tells you all you need to know.
