I am someone who was obsessed with Hamilton back in 2015. Knew every word before I ever saw the show and would go to the Ham4Ham lottery all the time. In fact, I was in the Halloween show as “Hamilton Trash” with my friends.
Now, 10 years later, we’re talking about the musical that seemed impossible. Mainly because who else would think that a show based on Founding Father Alexander Hamilton would be “good.” Created by Lin-Manuel Miranda based on the Ron Chernow novel on Hamilton, the show takes us through the adult life of the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury.
The musical, which uses rap music mixed with Broadway showtunes to detail Hamilton’s life, captured the hearts of many when it was first put on. Starting at the Public, the musical gained attention before its legendary splash on Broadway. It is still running today and the release of the filmed version in theaters has reminded us of one important thing: Fans still love Hamilton.
I was lucky enough to attend the premiere put on at the Delacorte theater in the middle of Central Park. Already, that was a surreal experience not to mention the fact that Bob Iger was there. But what I loved about it was seeing how many people still love this musical. I haven’t listened to Hamilton in probably 8 years and yet I still knew every word, cried during “It’s Quiet Uptown” and just felt connected to an audience.
And I’m far from the only person still sharing the love for the musical. What has been great about the release of Hamilton in theaters is seeing the amount of people dressing up and going to the movie theater to see a musical they love (and can literally watch at home).
The Best of Wives and Best of Women meme is great too
Part of what has been so fun recently is seeing the uptick in love for Hamilton. On TikTok, fans have been posting a meme set to a portion of “Best of Wives and Best of Women” when Hamilton is working and Eliza asks him to come back to sleep. For the most part, it features a woman wearing a fake goatee trying to climb out of a window.
The fact that after 10 years, we’re still seeing Hamilton memes pop up warms my heart. Yes, I was sitting in the audience of the Tony Awards and geeking out when Daveed Diggs started singing “Guns and Ships” during the anniversary performance. Yes, I was so happy when the premiere featured the audience singing along.
Because at the end of the day, I will always be a theatre kid at heart and the success of Hamilton made so many see what musical theatre can do. It is a beautiful artform that often gets dismissed because people misunderstand it. But Hamilton helped to change that and I will forever be grateful to Miranda and the team behind the musical for that. It helps too that Hamilton rules.
