'The loss everyone will suffer is unbearable' - Devastation as fire rips through Pollokshields flats

A Pollokshields resident has said the loss of people's homes amid the coronavirus lockdown is "unbearable" after a fire ripped through a tenement building.

Firefighters battled the well-developed blaze on Kenmure Street, which began at around 4.50pm.

Nine fire appliances are at the scene above a pharmacy.

It is the second fire to occur in the area in just four months, with a blaze ripping through tenements at the junction of Albert Drive and Kenmure Street in November last year.

Speaking to Glasgow Live , one resident spoke of the impact the fire could have amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis and lockdown.

They said: "We were absolutely devastated at the first fire on Kenmure Street, and cannot believe it’s happening again.

"The loss everyone will suffer is unbearable to think of, especially of people losing their home at a time where we’re all dealing with such uncertain events and home seems like the only safe refuge.

"We just hope the Pollokshields community will rally again as they did the first time to support those at this time."

In a tweet, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who represents the constituency, said the fire is "horrible to see".

She urged people to get in touch if they need assistance, writing "This is horrible to see - and so soon after the Albert Drive fire just across the road. Hoping everyone is safe and any damage is limited. But if any constituents need assistance, please get in touch - Nicola.sturgeon.msp@parliament.scot"
