The Loop: Qanon Shaman jailed and Malcolm X convicted killers set to be cleared thanks to Netflix doco

Good morning, it's Thursday, November 18. Here's what you need to get going today.

One thing to know right now: The 'Qanon Shaman' will spend more than three years in jail

You'll remember this guy from the US Capitol riots in January:

Jacob Chansley became known as the Shaman for the horned headdress he wore as he stormed the Capitol building. (Reuters: Stephanie Keith)

Here's what's happened:

  • Jacob Chansley's been sentenced to 41 months in prison for his role in the deadly attack by followers of then-US president Donald Trump
  • Prior to the riot, Mr Trump had made a fiery speech where he told his followers to "fight like hell"
  • Prosecutors had asked for a 51-month sentence. The judge said he believed Chansley had done a lot to convince the court he was "on the right track"
  • When he entered his guilty plea, Chansley said he was disappointed Mr Trump had not pardoned him

Here's what Chansley said before his sentencing:

"The hardest part of this is that I know I am to blame.

"I thought I was going to get 20 years solitary confinement.

"This trauma has done something to me … I have the white hairs to prove it … on my chest … on my arms … I should not have white hairs, your honour."

One thing you’ll be hearing about today: Victoria's pandemic bill looks like it'll be derailed

Former minister Adem Somyurek has said he'll vote against the bill, which has seen protesters camped outside parliament for most of the week (with some even directing death threats towards MPs who support the bill).

It *was* set to pass with crossbench support, but Mr Somyurek declared in an opinion piece in the Herald Sun that he'd vote against his former party

The laws will go back to the upper house for more debate today before a vote tonight.

And just to catch you up, they were made to replace the state of emergency laws (which had to be renewed every four weeks). Here's the gist of the bill:

  • It shifts the power to declare a pandemic from the chief health officer to the premier
  • It allows the state's pandemic status to be declared for up to three months at a time with no outer limit
  • It provides broad powers to a health minister to make public health orders
  • It creates an independent pandemic management advisory committee, to be made up of public health, human rights and community representatives

  • The Queen: The 95-year-old monarch made her first in-person royal engagement after a health scare in October

  • Afghanistan bombing: Islamic State has claimed responsibility for twin explosions in Kabul targeting Shi'ite Muslim areas. Taliban officials say at least one person has been killed and six others have been injured

The news Australia is searching for

  • Tim Tszyu: The boxer says he's "coming" for a world title after beating Takeshi Inoue in a brutal contest in Sydney. Tszyu's record is 20-0 and he's lined up to take a crack at Brian Castaño's world super welterweight title next year

That's it for now

We'll be back later on with more of the good stuff.
