The Loop: Public holiday delays surgeries and exams, man stabbed to death on Brisbane street, ticket site struggles with footy finals demand

Hi there. It's Monday, September 12 and you're reading The Loop, a quick wrap-up of today's news.

Our Loops look a bit different at the moment as people across Australia and around the world mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth II. We'll return to our usual programming soon, but for now, we hope these special editions of the Loop help you stay up to date.

The Queen: Everything you need to know

  • The Queen's coffin is lying in rest in Edinburgh after travelling from Balmoral Castle. On Monday afternoon local time (later tonight for Australians) a procession will take the Queen's coffin from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to the nearby St Giles' Cathedral, with King Charles III and members of the royal family to take part in the procession.
  • Thousands of Australians are scrambling to re-book long-awaited surgery and medical appointments originally scheduled for next Thursday after it was declared a "one-off" public holiday to mark the Queen's death. Schools have also been forced to rearrange plans for school formalsgraduation ceremonies and exams.
  • Thousands of people are expecting to shuffle through a queue for hours to pay their final respects to the Queen when her body arrives at the Palace of Westminster in London — now the UK government has published detailed guidelines of what people can and can't do when saying goodbye to Her Majesty.

Local news: Australian stories you might have missed

  • An independent review has found that former NSW minister Stuart Ayres did not breach the Ministerial Code of Conduct in the process of appointing John Barilaro as the state's trade commissioner to the US. Mr Ayres quit the ministry six weeks ago but denied any wrongdoing.
  • A 23-year-old man has been fatally stabbed in Brisbane's south-eastern suburbs, with police investigating bikie gang links to the attack. Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham described it as "quite a graphic and disturbing scene".
  • An investigation into food precincts in Darwin has seen nearly $400,000 in unpaid wages recovered by the Fair Work Ombudsman. Almost $100,000 was recovered from one business that underpaid casual and part-time employees, and inspectors found 76 per cent of the 48 business targeted were non-compliant with the Fair Work Act.

International news: What's happening around the world

  • Authorities in Pakistan are scrambling to protect a vital power station supplying electricity to millions of people against a growing flood threat. The electricity station is in the southern province of Sindh, one of the country's worst-affected areas, and a local official told Reuters "all preventative measures" have been taken to try to save the grid.
  • US President Joe Biden has marked the 21st anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a speech at the Pentagon, saying the country would "never give up" in its fight against terrorism. It comes comes a year after Mr Biden ended the US-led war in Afghanistan in chaotic fashion.
  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy Zelenskyy has described Ukraine's offensive in the north-east as a potential breakthrough in the six-month war with Russia. Ukraine's chief commander said armed forces had regained control of more than 3,000 square kilometres since the start of this month.

Looking it up: What Australians have been searching online

  • The NFL. Football's back, and even from the other side of the world, Australians want to know all the highlights — or lowlights, like Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott requiring surgery on a hand injury that's expected to keep him on the sidelines for several weeks.
  • Sam Mac. The popular television presenter has welcomed a baby girl named Margot with partner Rebecca, saying it was the "best day of his life".
  • Footy finals. Not the actual sport — the tickets to watch it. Ticketek has reportedly been struggling with demand after tickets for the next rounds of NRL and AFL finals and country singer Luke Combs's Australian tour dates were all released within hours of each other today.
