G'day. It's Tuesday, May 31 and you're reading The Loop, a quick wrap-up of today's news.
Let's start here
The ABC projects Labor will narrowly win the NSW seat of Gilmore and the Liberal Party will retain the seat of Deakin in Victoria.
Labor went ahead and claimed victory in Gilmore well before anyone else was willing to call the seat — incumbent Fiona Phillips says she's "just thrilled with the result".
Meanwhile, Anthony Albanese has officially announced his ministry this evening — ministers will be sworn in tomorrow.
What else is going on
- First responders to a boat crash at Horizontal Falls say they weren't expecting the severity of injuries and unpredictable conditions they were confronted with when they reached the scene. "I've seen a lot of different injuries and illnesses with my time at the Royal Flying Doctor Service, but I've never been on a remote pontoon on the water with more than 10 injured people," doctor Sally Edmonds says
- A man has pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court to abducting a four-month-old boy after stealing a car with the child still inside. The 37-year-old stole a Honda Jazz from outside a Klemzig deli on Monday morning, then abandoned the car (with the baby still in the back seat) a couple of hours later
- The first of the victims of the Uvalde school shooting have been laid to rest in the US as the conversation about the country's divisive gun laws continues. Local mother Rhapsody Weaver says she's angry about how easily the teenage shooter could purchase a firearm, but says she's just as upset that hers might not be the majority view. "People want their guns in Texas," she says
What Australia has been searching for online
- Brisbane's earthquake. Geoscience Australia says a magnitude-3 tremor was detected near Kilcoy this afternoon — there have been no reports of any major damage, but people throughout northern and central Brisbane say they felt the shake.
- Gun control in Canada. The Canadian government has introduced draft legislation that will put a freeze on importing, buying or selling handguns, with Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair saying gun ownership is "a privilege, not a right" in the country.
