The Loop: Prince Louis steals the Jubilee show, Russian forces bomb Kyiv, and Aussie golfer chasing major win

The moment Prince Louis acts up at Jubilee pageant

Hi there, it's Monday, June 6. Here's what you need to get going today.

One thing to know right now: The Queen's surprise balcony wave

The Jubilee celebrations are over, but this unscheduled moment from the Queen thrilled the crowds.

Here's what happened:

  • The surprise appearance as everything wrapped up came alongside a statement on social media, where the Queen she was "humbled" and "deeply touched" over the days of celebrations, despite not being able to attend:
  • She appeared on the palace balcony with Prince Charles, and Prince William and his family
  • A 3-kilometre long carnival-style parade took centre stage on the final day.
  • It started with military pomp and pageantry before dozens of floats representing different decades of the Queen's 70-year reign made their way down the Mall
  • But before the Queen stepped up, it was Prince Louis who stole the show (in typical four-year-old style), acting up while watching the parade:

One thing you’ll be hearing about today: Minjee Lee's trying to make history

The Aussie golfer is in a good spot to take out the US Women's Open. Here's the lowdown:

  • Lee is chasing a second major at Pine Needles in North Carolina
  • Here's the leaderboard now (and we're blogging it live here):
    • Minjee Lee -13 (10)
    • Mina Harigae -9 (10)
    • Hyejin Choi -7 (13)
    • Lydia Ko -7 (11)
  • It's (arguably) the biggest tournament in women's golf history — with the largest prize purse ever. It's $US10 million total, with $1.8 million for the winner
  • And *another* touch of history: Lee would be the third Aussie woman to take the tournament. Karrie Webb won it in both 2000 and 2001, and Jan Stephenson won hers in 1981. All three of those wins came after holding a 54-hole lead (the same as Lee). So fingers crossed...

News while you snoozed

Let's get you up to speed.

  • Kyiv has been hit by several explosions in the early hours of the morning. Officials said the Russian bombardment was targeting the rail network, and there was one confirmed death. Russia is continuing to concentrate its forces on Sievierodonetsk, in eastern Ukraine

The news Australia is searching for

  • Wales Ukraine: That's the good news for Welsh football fans after they made their first World Cup in 64 years. Their side beat Ukraine 1-0
  • All I Want for Christmas is You: It's in your head now, isn't it? Yes, that's the Mariah Carey Christmas anthem that's trending — and it's all because she's being sued for copyright infringement. And here, thank me later:

That's it for now

We'll be back later on with more.
