ICYMI: Hail falls in... (checks notes) Townsville??

The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed isolated reports of hail in parts of Queensland's north during a thunderstorm yesterday.

That came as a bit of a shock to residents, who have sweltered through extreme heatwave conditions this week.

Forecaster Peter Clarson says it's "not something we see often at all" in areas like Townsville.

"Yesterday was the warmest day in Townsville since March and it looks like it will be a repeat of that again today," he says.

Fun fact: Australia voted against conscription (only just) on this day 106 years ago

October 28, 1916.

Australia voted in a referendum answering the question:

Are you in favour of the government having in this grave emergency, the same compulsory powers over citizens in regard to requiring their military service, for the term of this war, outside the Commonwealth, as it now has in regard to military service within the Commonwealth?

An extremely slim majority voted against it, and it remained a contentious issue as WWI continued.

Overnight: Hamilton says he's sticking with Mercedes

Seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton says he'll be negotiating a new contract with Mercedes and plans to remain with the manufacturer that has stuck with him since his start in the sport.

Hamilton's current deal expires at the end of 2023, but he told The Race that discussions will be held in the next few months and assired fans that they're "stuck with me for quite a while longer".

"Do I imagine myself being here beyond 40? Maybe," he told the publication.

"But we are going to do another deal."

It comes after Mercedes boss Toto Wolff told reporters earlier this month that Hamilton has five more years in him and he was "absolutely certain that Lewis can win the eighth world title with us".

Update: Motive for Italian supermarket stabbing still not clear

Authorities in Italy are investigating all the circumstances around a mass stabbing at a supermarket that killed one person and injured multiple others.

The BBC reports a 46-year-old suspect has been detained but the motive for the attack is not yet clear.

Italian police say one person, understood to be a Bolivian national, did not survive — European media is reporting that the victim was a worker at a supermarket.

Monza player Pablo Mari was taken to hospital after being involved in the attack.

The club's Chief Executive Adriano Galliani told Sky Italy that his injuries aren't life-threatening.

"Pablo Mari had a fairly deep wound on his back, which fortunately did not touch his vital organs such as the lungs or others," Galliani said.

"This is all about making sure we don't make the mistakes of the past," Mr Perrottet says.

"It is going to be a long journey but we'll be with the community every step of the way.

"I have seen significant progress over the last six months, but this is a long-term position that will ensure that our communities here right across the Northern Rivers continue to be more resilient into the future."

Overnight: Putin says he's 'ready' to negotiate but Kyiv doesn't want to talk

Vladimir Putin has told a conference in Moscow that Russia is ready to negotiate with Ukrainian authorities about ending the violent conflict that has dragged on for months.

Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club, Putin claimed the US has the "deciding word" in commencing discussions.

"It's not a question about us, we are ready for negotiations. But the leaders in Kyiv decided not to continue negotiations with Russia," he said.

"It is very easy to solve this problem if Washington gives a signal to Kyiv to change its position and solve the problem peacefully."

Putin also said South Korea's decision to supply weapons to Ukraine will "destroy our relationship".

"How would the Republic of Korea react to the fact if we started, if we resume cooperation with North Korea in this area?" he said.
