The Loop: Coalition accused of stirring up China, flooding in NSW and strict bathroom break rules for pro tennis players

Good morning!

It's Tuesday, November 23. Here's what you need to get going today.

One thing to know right now: Penny Wong accuses Peter Dutton of 'amping up' threat of war with China

Penny Wong will deliver a speech saying the Coalition is "amplifying Beijing's fatalism" on Taiwan. (ABC News: Luke Stephenson)

Here's the lowdown:

  • Senator Wong, the Shadow Foreign Minister, will be making a speech today at the National Security College in Canberra
  • The Labor senator will accuse the Coalition of feeding into China's narrative that war in Taiwan is inevitable
  • She reckons Mr Dutton, the Defence Minister, is deliberately needling China's government and "amping up" the threat of war in a bid to improve the Coalition's chances of winning the next election
  • Earlier this month Mr Dutton said it was "inconceivable" that Australia would not back the US if there was a war over Taiwan

Another thing you’ll be hearing about today: Flooding in NSW

  • SES crews doorknocked residents in low-lying parts of Denman in NSW's Upper Hunter region, ordering residents living in three streets close to the Hunter River to leave their homes by 3.30am
  • Meanwhile, in the state's central west, the community of Bedgerabong has been told to prepare for up to five weeks of isolation due to flooding of the Lachlan River — it's possible they could be cut off until after Christmas
  • Yesterday three teachers were airlifted to work at Bedgerabong Public School so classes can still go ahead
  • The Bureau of Meteorology's NSW Twitter account has been going off overnight, with flood warnings issued for Kingdon Ponds (Scone), Macintyre and Severn, Gwydir, Peel and Namoi, Castlereagh, Macquarie, Lachlan and Paroo rivers

News while you snoozed

Let's get you up to speed.

  • South Australia's borders re-opened to interstate travellers overnight. Fully vaccinated travellers from states with COVID-19 outbreaks will be allowed into the state, provided they produce a negative test within 72 hours before arriving and undergo a daily symptom check for 14 days.

  • Wisconsin police say they're drawing up homicide charges against the man who crashed an SUV through street barriers and ploughed into a Christmas parade, killing at least five people and injuring dozens. They're not treating it as a terrorist incident and say the man had been in a domestic disturbance just minutes before

The news Australia is searching for

  • Jacqui Lambie: The Tasmanian senator's response to Pauline Hanson's bid to ban mandatory vaccinations has really hit a nerve:

One more thing: How long does a trip to the loo take you?

Five minutes? Seven minutes? 12.5 minutes?

Well, if you're in the pro tennis circuit, you're going to have to cut it down to just three minutes.

From next season, players on the Association of Tennis Professionals men's tour will only be allowed one three minute break per match.

And the break must be taken between sets.

This comes after a dispute at this year's US Open, when Stefanos Tsitisipas was accused of taking long bathroom breaks for strategic reasons in his match with Andy Murray.

That's it for now

We'll be back later on with more of the good stuff.
