The Loop: Albanese 'visibly moved' on Kyiv visit, NSW flood warning, a scary F1 crash, and Minions take off at box office

Hi there, it's Monday, July 4. Here's what you need to get going today.

One thing to know right now: Albanese 'visibly moved' by 'war crimes'

  • The PM visited Bucha, Irpin and Hostomel — all known sites of brutal mass killings committed by Russian forces that have since been examined by war crimes investigators
  • Mr Albanese said what he saw was "a war crime", adding:
  • And the ABC's Europe Correspondent Steve Cannane said the PM was "visibly moved" as he was escorted through areas that were "brutally assaulted"

  • Later at a press conference with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Mr Albanese promised an extra $100 million in military aid, including another 20 bushmaster vehicles and 14 armoured personnel carriers
  • Australia is the largest non-NATO contributor to Ukraine's fight

One thing you’ll be hearing about today: NSW SES warns 'you will flood again'

There were 69 evacuation orders live at 6:30am and the SES is urging people to follow those instructions. Here's where things stand:

  • The latest orders were for Illawarra, Western Sydney and the Hawkesbury-Nepean areas
  • There were 18 flood rescues overnight. They take the total rescues to more than 100, with more than 3,000 calls for help coming into the SES
  • Floods are likely to exceed some levels reached in the three recent major Hawkesbury flood events since March 2021
  • SES Assistant Commissioner Sean Kearns said residents don't have to wait for an evacuation order to leave:

  • Zhou Guanyu: The F1 driver was in this frightening crash during the first lap of the British Grand Prix. His team said he didn't lose consciousness or suffer any fractures in the crash

One more thing: Minions latest makes massive box office debut

Families shelled out around $US108.5 million ($159 million) in ticket sales across the US for Minions: The Rise of Gru, and by the end of the July 4 weekend, it'll have earned $127.9 million, with its worldwide takings at $202.2 million.

So just how big is that?

The film is on track to become one of the biggest openings ever for this holiday weekend, a record previously held by Transformers: Dark of the Moon which made $115.9 million in its first four days in 2011

That's it for now

We'll be back later on with more.
