The long-lost Nottingham pubs you'd like to bring back

The Fountain Inn was a popular meeting place for decades - and unsurprisingly it's among a number of old pubs you'd liked to see brought back.

Having opened in the 1960s, the Bridlesmith Gate boozer served its last pint in 1999 before it was turned into shops including White Stuff and Cath Kidston.

More than 20 years on, people still have a soft spot for the old pub as its name cropped up several times when Nottinghamshire Live asked its readers about the long-lost pubs they'd like to see return.

Chris Barnes Junior said: "Fountain... Some great nights in there - even Sunday evening was decent."

"Loved the Fountain," added Sue Wood.

Another reader mentioned Jacey's in Heathcoat Street.

It used to be a pub called the Old Plough, then it became a bar called Jacey's, then it became a gay bar – still called Jacey's – with male strippers. It closed as gay bar Queen of Clubs in 2014.

The Flying Horse and Dog and Bear were also mourned by readers when asked for their suggestions.

"Definitely Dog & Bear, always first on the list of many on a Saturday night," said Arron Kirkby.

"I remember all the fights in there," said Adrian Byrne.

The Dog and Bear in Bridlesmith Gate owed its name to Nottingham’s bear-baiting past. This was reflected in the pub’s windows and in a carving above the first storey depicting a dog attacking a bear.

The Dog and Bear was one of the city’s oldest inns, mentioned in borough records of 1733 and rebuilt in 1876.

The last public bear baiting event in Nottingham was held on The Forest in 1840, less than a decade before the revolting sport was declared illegal. The pub closed during the 1990s and later the premises were converted into a coffee house.
