The Long Call viewers complain about 'mumbling' as they struggle to follow the plot

The Long Call left viewers offering the same feedback about "mumbling" after the show's premiere on Monday night.

Based on the Ann Cleeves novel of the same name, the ITV detective drama will air each night this week before its conclusion on Thursday night.

Despite the show receiving praise for the cast, writing and representation, many viewers tuning in to watch the murder mystery suffered from some audio issues.

A number of people tuned in found themselves adjusting the volume on their television set in an attempt to hear the actors speak on the new series.

"I know my hearing is not what it used to be, but even with subtitles, I've now lost the plot #TheLongCall," one fan mused on Twitter during the broadcast.

"This is one of those you need to have your finger glued to remote control volume.....#thelongcall," another moaned online.

A third added: "Wish i had subtitles #mumbling #TheLongCall."

Many that could hear clearly weren't too impressed with everything they heard on-screen.

A number of Devon residents took issue with the show's actors using 'generic' West country accents as they uttered their lines.

"Watching 'The Long Call'. It is being ruined for me by the complete pig's ear that the long list of well known actors are making of the North Devonian accent," one fumed online.

Another agreed, adding: "Is it me or are they trying to speak as fast as possible in the worst west country accents?"

The Long Call features Our Girl and Fleabag actor Ben Aldridge as Detective Matthew Venn.

The openly gay detective is forced to return to his hometown in North Devon to investigate a new case - a mysterious murder.

As he tries to crack the case, Matthew has to return to the community that rejected and alienated him years ago.

Viewers have praised The Long Call for putting some positive representation on screen.

Many viewers took to Twitter to praise the ITV drama (ITV)

"I thought #TheLongCall was terrific. Cracking story, excellent cast & it looks stunning. Plus a primetime gay detective and his husband played by two out gay actors. This representation is important," one fan gushed on social media.

Another added: "Thanks @AnnCleeves, a man in the positive lead role and happy marriage that’s also gay."

After nabbing the lead role, Ben, 35, said he was "privileged" to play the TV detetective.

"I’m delighted to be playing Matthew Venn, a brilliantly unorthodox detective who audiences will see solving a gripping and intricate case, whilst simultaneously surmounting a deeper, more personal mystery within himself," he said.

"And I feel privileged to be bringing it to ITV viewers in The Long Call."

The four-part detective series also features Juliet Stevenson, Pearl Mackie and Declan Bennett.
