All the lockdown restrictions Boris Johnson expected to lift today

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will lead this evening's coronavirus press conference and announce a raft of changes to the country's lockdown restrictions.

A few hours after facing a grilling from Sir Keir Starmer and other MPs at Prime Minister's Questions this lunchtime, Mr Johnson is expected to outline the changes coming in from next week.

It has already been announced that from Monday June 15, all non-essential retail businesses will be allowed to reopen.

But Mr Johnson is expected to add zoos, safari parks and drive-in cinemas to that list when he speaks this evening.

He is also expected to use today's announcement to discuss 'air bridges' - a plan which would allow Brits to holiday in some foreign countries without quarantine.

It would also allow tourists from those countries to visit and stay in the UK.

The move is being discussed by Ministers after they brought in a controversial move meaning that anyone arriving in the UK must isolate at an address for two weeks.

The move has been heavily criticised by airlines and holiday companies who say it has come too late and will seriously damage the spiralling industry.

The announcement on zoos and safari parks represents another u-turn from the government, who had initially said they must remain closed for the entirety of June.

But pressure from facilities like Chester Zoo - which said it was unlikely to survive that long with no customers - has seen a change in policy.

These sites will be able to open from Monday, as long as strict social distancing rules are kept to.

A Downing Street official said: “People are continuing to make huge sacrifices to reduce the spread of coronavirus and avoid a second spike, but we know it is tough and where we can safely open up more attractions, and it is supported by the science, we will do so.

“This is by necessity a careful process, but we hope the reopening of safari parks and zoos will help provide families with more options to spend time outdoors while supporting the industry caring for these incredible animals.”

Mr Johnson is expected to face tough questions in the Commons and at the press conference over the situation surrounding school openings.

Yesterday the Education Secretary Gavin Williamson performed another u-turn as he said he did not now expect many school children to go back until September.

This came after pressure from teachers, unions and councils who said enough safety measures had not been put in place to protect children and staff.
