The loan signing rules and the Swansea City transfer hint it offers

Sam Surridge became Swansea City's sixth summer signing when he joined on loan from Bournemouth.

The 21-year-old striker will spend the duration of the 2019/20 campaign with the Swans and is in contention to make his debut against Derby County this weekend.

Surridge's is Swansea's fourth loan capture of the summer, with Ben Wilmot, Freddie Woodman and Aldo Kalulu also making the move to South Wales on temporary deals.

And while the Swans now appear to be more focused on exits rather than signings, you cannot rule out the possibility of any further additions being made before the transfer deadline.

Given the club's financial position, Swansea were always expected to utilise the loan and free market this summer, something chairman Trevor Birch alluded to when he met supporters at the first fans' forum of the season.

And the rules surrounding loan players may well influence Steve Cooper's thoughts.

There actually isn't a limit on the number of loan players a club can sign.

However, there is a cap on how many loan players can feature in a matchday squad.

Cooper - and every other Championship manager - will only be able to select five loan players in their 18-man matchday squads.

At present, that will not be an issue for Cooper given that he has only four players on loan to choose from. But that could change if he were to make any further temporary additions.

The only instance in which that particular rule changes is when a club recruits an emergency goalkeeper, with that side then only allowed to use four loan players in their matchday squad.

Clubs can sign a maximum of four players on loan from any given club, although only two of those can be over the age of 23, again, something that is unlikely to be of concern to Cooper.

The head coach had all four summer signings in his matchday squad in the 2-1 win over Hull City at the Liberty Stadium last weekend and has since added Kalulu and Surridge to his ranks.

So it's clear that those who have come in through the door this summer could be hugely influential under Cooper this season.
