The Liverpool player who proves Nabil Fekir transfer is not needed

Nabil Fekir almost became a Liverpool player last summer before a deal with Lyon fell through at the 11th hour.

It was a dramatic no deal for the player and the club but transfer speculation since has always linked Liverpool with another move for the Lyon star.

The attacking midfielder enjoyed a solid campaign just gone with Lyon as he bagged nine goals and assisted seven in Ligue 1. Lyon finished third in the competition behind Lille and Paris Saint-Germain.

Liverpool, however, are not interested in resurrecting a deal for Fekir and one former player in Neil Mellor actually believes the 25-year-old would not necessarily walk into the Reds' squad anyway.

Whilst Liverpool's midfielders didn't score too many goals last season and that was mostly down to the club's style of play, Mellor insists Fekir would find it hard to break into the side regardless. Mellor, in fact, sees Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as the player who can bag more goals from midfield for the Reds next season.

"He’s (Fekir) done very well for Lyon and scored a very important goal for them to progress through the Champions League group stages this season," Mellor told  AmericanGambler.com. "He's an attacking midfield player who contributes goals.

"There wasn’t too much pressure on the Liverpool midfield to score goals last season because the front three scored so many again. Oxlade-Chamberlain is that player, when fit, who can get goals from midfield. There is no doubt Nabil has the quality but it’s whether he could come into what is already a very competitive area within the Liverpool squad."
