The Liverpool game Pep Guardiola used as example to defend Manchester City after Tottenham defeat

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has issued his verdict on his side's 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur - using a Liverpool example to defend the result.

The Reds ' title rivals have work to do in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie after suffering defeat at the hands of Tottenham in north London on Tuesday evening, where Son Heung-Min scored the only goal of the game after Sergio Aguero saw a first-half penalty saved by Hugo Lloris.

City , as a result, have witnessed a significant blow to their hopes of an unprecedented quadruple this season and the aftermath of the result could provide an impact on their Premier League title race with Liverpool, as Guardiola's side face off against Mauricio Pochettino's top-four chasers again twice in the next couple of weeks.

The defeat came as a surprise, with City seen by many as the clear favourites for their clash with Tottenham, but Guardiola had a rather interesting reaction - as he turned back the clocks to the same stage last season.

"I don't think we played badly, we created chances and we controlled the game in the first half," he said after the match.

"The result of course was not good but last year was much worse."

Why Jurgen Klopp apologised to Jordan Henderson after Liverpool win against Porto

At this stage last season, Liverpool tackled City in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and inflicted a 3-0 defeat upon Guardiola's side, then winning the reverse leg at the Eithad Stadium 2-1 to advance to the semi-finals on the back of a comfortable 5-1 aggregate score.

Rather interestingly, the defeat to Tottenham continues a woeful record for Guardiola personally away from home in the Champions League in the latter stages.

He has now failed to win an away leg in the quarter-finals or semi-finals since 2011.
