The Liverpool expert view on Chelsea, 'a club in constant crisis' and Frank Lampard the rookie

The familiar foes have met once already this season, Liverpool winning the Super Cup in a penalty shootout last month, but for periods of that game Chelsea produced arguably their most convincing performance under Frank Lampard.

Still, Liverpool are the favourites on Sunday having already opened up a five-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the table - although Tuesday's Champions League defeat away to Napoli was a minor surprise for the holders.

But what do they make of the new Blues on Merseyside? Football.london spoke to Paul Gorst of the Liverpool Echo to find out more.

What has been the key to such a good start to the league season? Is it merely a continuation of last season or have there been some subtle changes?

Liverpool had won their last nine games of last season's Premier League, so I just think this is more a continuation of that run. I think it maybe stands out more as Manchester City have already been beaten and dropped two points against Tottenham. Changes wise, there doesn't appear to be many noticeable. It's still the same reliance on creativity from full back areas and the front three are the ones trusted to score the goals and carve teams up.

Despite the league form, what happened in Naples?

Liverpool were unlucky in Naples on Tuesday night. For large parts of the game, they matched a side who, it is perhaps being overlooked, are one of the best in Italy. Only Juventus would be justified to claim they are better. Napoli have a good side with players like Kalidou Koulibaly, Lorenzo Insigne, Dries Mertens and Hirving Lozano, to name just a few.

I do feel, however, that the penalty decision was scandalous. VAR was brought in to stop these kinds of errors and mistakes and - dare we say - conning of officials. Quite why it wasn't overruled is anyone's guess. And then a mistake from Virgil van Dijk proved he is in fact human. A bad day at the office for the Reds, but it is no disaster and I don't think that will linger for long.

Do you expect any surprises in the line-up on Sunday?

Not necessarily, Joe Gomez might start at right back but I think Trent Alexander-Arnold will keep his place. I think Gini Wijnaldum will probably return for James Milner, but it won't be a game for Xherdan Shaqiri or Dejan Lovren. Naby Keita is on the comeback trail but I can't see him being involved in this one either. Fabinho's influence is growing by the game in this Liverpool midfield, so I expect him to start alongside Jordan Henderson.

Having already met in the Super Cup, what's the impression of Frank Lampard's team on Merseyside?

Chelsea are a really strange one, from the outside. They finished third last season and won the Europa League - and then sacked the manager who had achieved it for them in Maurizio Sarri. They are a team who seem to be in constant crisis, yet almost annually pick up a trophy. I think the idea of this Chelsea, Lampard's Chelsea, is that he is a relative rookie at elite-level management, working with a transfer ban, attempting to reshuffle the culture of the club towards trusting in young, English talent. It might take a couple of seasons before he gets the best out of himself and his squad and this campaign should be viewed as a testing ground.

If Liverpool fans could sign one current Chelsea player, who would it be? And why?

I think most Liverpool fans would love to see N'Golo Kante patrolling his way across the Anfield turf. The France international is a one-man midfield and can do everything you ask of him to a world-class standard. A top player who would be perfect for Liverpool.

Prediction?

I think for the first time in the Roman Abramovich era, Liverpool enjoy the biggest gap there has been between the sides. For years it was Chelsea who were streets ahead, domestically, at least, but now the shoe is very much on the other foot. I think Liverpool will win this one, 2-1.
