The Liverpool and Manchester City comparisons that make Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino laugh

Mauricio Pochettino has claimed that any achievement he reaches with Tottenham will be "unique".

The Spurs manager has received plaudits for the work that he has done in North London, despite not winning any silverware during his five years at the club.

The 47-year-old gave a passionate response when asked about the players accepting that they may not win trophies with the club.

"How do you fight against that feeling which has been at the club for years and years?" The Argentinian asked El Pais.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino reveals how he's kept 'ambitious' players happy at Spurs

"That describes the sensation of the group when we arrived here in 2014. That was the mentality. That’s why we laugh when Tottenham are compared with Liverpool or people say we’ve rivals to City and United. Who analyses these types of things?

"And another question: Would I like (Spurs) to be a City or a Liverpool? In some ways, yes, and in other ways, no. I prefer to fight for something historical, unique and that I have doubts about achieving it. But watch out for what we achieve! Because it’ll be unique.

Pochettino has explained that throwing money at winning trophy after trophy is something that he wants to steer away from, and that he wants Spurs to be managed in a different way to a lot of successful teams.

"At Barcelona, Madrid, City.. they don’t have time and, due to heavy investment in short periods of time, all that matters is winning," he continued.

"If a player doesn’t work, bring me another. It’s completely different. Perhaps one day I’ll be in that position and I can win something that way. But these projects, powered by money at an alarming speed run a risk of feeling empty. Nothing else exists."

And Pochettino used his captain Hugo Lloris as an example of how they do things at Spurs and the togetherness that exists.

"What is Tottenham?" Pochettino said. "What makes the coaching staff proud? That a goalkeeper such as Hugo Lloris, who adapted to our philosophy, who improved us, who works hard and a year ago won the World Cup, came to me and said: 'Boss, your World Cup is here.' And there it was! His World Cup was there!

Tottenham's most likely summer signings may highlight Mauricio Pochettino's transfer strategy

"He came and brought it to me and said: 'Here you are.' What title could give you a bigger sense of satisfaction? None! There isn’t anything better than a World champion, France’s captain, lifting up the trophy and instead of having it at his home, he brought it to me."

Pochettino's side still do have the chance to win the first trophy of their manager's reign this season. They travel to the Netherlands to take on Ajax in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final tonight (Wednesday).
