The live-streamed gigs and DJ sets to keep you entertained during coronavirus lockdown

With the UK on lockdown for at least the next few weeks, Manchester's gig venues and nightclubs have fallen silent.

The city's usually vibrant clubbing and live music scene is in hibernation as the nation stays at home in an attempt to halt the spread of Covid-19.

Theatres, bars and restaurants also have their shutters down for the time being, leading to live-streamed theatre and new takeaway services.

It's not taken long for the leading figures of Manchester's music scene to do the same, with live streams, listening parties and masterclasses now hitting various social media platforms.

If you're stuck for weekend ideas, why not pour yourself a big glass of wine and get your live entertainment fix through one of the below.

Spotted one we're missing? Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter @CityLifeManc.

We Shall Overcome Isolation Festival

The Station in Ashton-under-Lyne (Manchester Evening News)

12 straight hours of entertainment will be coming to you in April, curated and organised by The Station Hotel in Ashton.

The aim is to fundraise, first and foremost - The Station is a valuable hub for the homeless, with its landlady Pauline Town handing out dozens of packed lunches every day.

But the event’s also been put together to have some fun while we’re all going without live music during lockdown.

There’ll be more than 30 artists performing through the We Shall Overcome Facebook page between 12pm and midnight on Saturday April 11.

Tim Burgess's Twitter Listening Parties

In the age of Spotify and streaming, it’s less common to sit and listen to an entire album straight through, in order, than it once was.

That’s why The Charlatan’s Tim Burgess has launched #timstwitterlisteningparty, with a different album chosen each night and plenty of assistance from prominent figures in the industry.

We’ve already had Twitter chats from Blur’s Dave Rowntree, and Franz Ferdinand, with Liam Gallagher lined up for Friday night’s Definitely Maybe party.

Tim’s enjoying them so much, he’s already suggested carrying it on long after the coronavirus pandemic. Fingers crossed.

Blossoms

Blossoms (Scarlet Page)

The Stockport band were supposed to be playing a massive homecoming gig at the Manchester Arena this weekend, which has now been postponed until August.

To try and fill the void left in 21,000 people's diaries, they're going to be streaming their recent Stockport Plaza gig instead.

The YouTube stream will take place at 8pm on Saturday March 28 on YouTube.

Jimmy’s

George and Jimmy Craig (Manchester Evening News)

One of the first to adapt to live streaming was Jimmy’s, the music bar formerly in the Northern Quarter and due to open in Ancoats later this year.

Founded by brothers and One Night Only bandmates George and Jimmy Craig, they still have a busy venue over in Liverpool.

They’ve called upon musical friends to host a string of live music sessions through their Instagram channel, including The Amazons and former CityLife Award winners Fuzzy Sun.

George said they started the isolation gigs because they wanted ‘music be a leading light in these dark times’.

Liam Fray listening party and Q&A

Liam Fray of the Courteeners (Jon Mo / RadioX)

The Courteeners frontman will be revisiting their eponymous debut St Jude on an Instagram Live session on Friday night.

As well as listening back to the record, he'll be answering questions from fans.

He posted a picture of the recognisable album cover on Instagram and wrote: "Yes yes people. I'm gonna do a Instagram Live playback/listening/Q&A thingy for that St. Jude album we did many moons ago.

"It could be rubbish but it could be alright. Come and see me. Ask me anything. Within reason.

"Big Love to you all & your families"

Liam's listening party will take place on his Instagram account at 9pm on Friday March 27.

Visit Saddleworth

Events website Visit Saddlewroth is going to be running a series of live streams through its Facebook page with local musicians.

The series kicked off with Jake Fletcher last weekend, and will continue this Saturday at 8pm.

They posted on Facebook to say: “With our roots firmly in the arts it's difficult to see many of our friends in the industry facing a challenging few months ahead given the current restrictions on mass gatherings.

“Earlier today we sat wondering how we could support or enable some friends to continue doing what they do best.

“As of this week we'll be running a series of live streams from local artists with the option to donate whilst you're watching the stream.”

You can watch them through the Visit Saddleworth Facebook page.

Big Kitchen Disco

Specially created to keep us all dancing together during the coronavirus lockdown, the premise of Big Kitchen Disco is a simple one.

Simply download or stream the suggested daily song, turn up the volume, and let loose in your kitchen for a few minutes.

The aim is ‘taking the edge off social distancing with some social disco dancing’.

It’s incredibly uniting to think that hundreds are dancing to the same tune at the same time, even if we can’t all do it in the same room.

Follow @BigKitchenDisco on Twitter to see what today’s song is, and reply with your kitchen selfies.

Spirit Studios

Now’s the perfect time to learn a new skill, whether it’s picking up a new language or trying your hand at knitting.

Unfortunately, with all shops but supermarkets now closed, getting your hands on the tools you’ll need isn’t all that straightforward.

Thankfully, Manchester’s production school Spirit Studios is going to be welcoming musicians who will teach you how to make music using everyday household items on Instagram Live.

She might not bang the drums, but she sure can bang a saucepan.
