The Little Stranger exclusive: Domhnall Gleeson stars in a supernatural drama that defies conventional labels

"There is an energy about the film that is constantly changing," is star Domhnall Gleeson's description of his beguiling new film, The Little Stranger.

Based on the 2009 novel by Sarah Waters, the film sees director Lenny Abrahamson, best known for the Academy Award-nominated The Room, invoke a story that mixes psychological thrills, supernatural occurrences, swooning romance, and even a dash of wry humour.

Gleeson stars as Dr. Faraday, who finds himself marooned between social classes: having grown up relatively poor, his mother a housemaid employed at Hundreds Hall, Faraday has now found esteem and success as a doctor. Though he's still alienated from the owners of the Hall, Mrs. Ayres and her two daughters.

Returning in 1947 to treat a new patient, he finds the Hall in decline, as the secrets of the Ayres and their past start to unearth themselves. Ruth Wilson, Will Poulter, Charlotte Rampling, Josh Dylan, and Liv Hill also star.

The Little Stranger hits UK 21 September.
