The little-known tax benefits everyone in Ireland is entitled to that could save you a small fortune

Irish citizens are entitled to a number of tax benefits that are not means-tested, and therefore are available to everyone who submits the relevant information.

In a Reddit forum focused on Irish living hacks, one user explained that he has found many people to be unaware of one particular money-back scheme.

When it comes to medical expenses in Ireland, there are a number of means-tested supports, to help with the cost of any medical care and medicine required by those earning under a certain amount per year.

However, every citizen is entitled to claim tax back on their dental and medical receipts, including prescription medicine.

The person wrote on Reddit saying “the amount of people who don't know they can do it is shocking.”

Others responded to his post saying they were completely unaware of the fact that they could claim tax back on these expenses, with one writing: “They keep these things so hush you’d need to be an expert to know it.”

The original poster wrote: “Keep your medical and dental receipts (including prescription meds) and claim on your tax for them at the end of the year.

“The amount of people who don't know they can do it is shocking. You don't get much but it's better in your pocket.

“On the subject of prescription medication, if you don't have a medical card, get yourself a Drugs Payment Scheme card.

“It limits the amount you (or your family) pay on (most) prescription medication to €80 per month.

“It's a bit shit for individuals, but for families, it's well worth it, especially if someone has asthma or other chronic illness. It's not means-tested, and you can use the receipts against your tax as per above.”

Another responder said: “I'll chase this up and see how much I can get back. Thanks. Your post only just made me look this up.”

According to the Revenue, qualifying health expenses are for health care you have paid for.
