Spain's little-known drinking law could see you slapped with fine on the spot

Many may not know that drinking in public places in parts of Spain could leave you with a fine.

Holidaymakers caught drinking alcohol on the street, beaches or parks could land in a spot of trouble with the law.

In Foreign Office travel guidance, the rules state that certain parts of the country will not allow them to engage in 'forbidden' behaviour, with on-the-spot fines issued.

So, what exactly are the rules? Here's everything you need to know.

What are the rules?

The rules - which extend to public spaces like beaches - will not allow for drinking as well as any sexual activity in a public place.

This rule is not enforced across the country with different councils being able to set the restrictions as they see fit.

FCDO government guidance states: "Some local councils in Spain have banned the consumption of alcohol in the street and on-the-spot fines may be issued.

"There are strict controls on drinking and sexual activity in public places, including beaches."

How much could I be fined?

Fines could amount to €3,000 according Wales Online. Other banned behaviour includes nudity on non-nude beaches, smoking, and barbecuing on certain beaches.

The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs has also provided guidance, warning that: “Consumption of alcohol in public places, except licensed bars and restaurants, is forbidden in Madrid, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.

“Failure to respect these laws may result in a fine.”

This comes on the back of a six drink cap at all-inclusive establishments in certain parts of Spain which has been implemented to stomp out drunken behaviour.
