The Lion King: New poster and trailer released for Disney reboot starring Beyonce and Donald Glover

A new poster and trailer for Disney’s CGI-animated remake of The Lion Kingwere revealed during last night’s Oscar ceremony.

Using similar CGI technology to the studio’s 2016 The Jungle Bookremake, The Lion King features a voice cast of contemporary stars, including Beyoncé, Donald Glover, Chiwotel Ejiofor, Seth Rogen and John Oliver.

The poster, which depicts King Mufasa (James Earl Jones) looking over a sunset with his son Simba, was met with praise for its nostalgic evocation of the imagery of the original.

However, fans hoping the trailer would give them a taste of some of the film’s performances have been sorely disappointed.

The minute-long trailer is very similar to the first teaser trailer, which launched last November and accrued 224.6m views in 24 hours. It echoes almost beat-for-beat a famous scene from the original Lion King, in which the animal kingdom gathers to celebrate the birth of Simba.

In particular, people were upset at being denied a glimpse of the character Nala, Simba’s mother, who is voiced by Beyoncé. Some took to Twitter to voice their frustration:

The Lion King is released in cinemas in the UK and the US on 19 July.
